Flex-grouping is simply a way of grouping students together for more effective instructional purposes. This can be as a whole class, a small group, or with a partner. These groups are not permanent, and students can move in and out of the groups based on progress towards specific standards/skills. We are finding this is a great way to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of each individual student, and it allows the teacher to zero in on any specific needs of one student. The learning targets will remain the same throughout each grade level but the level of the content being taught will match the student’s currently level of knowledge.
Current implementation of FLEX grouping is allowing our teachers to accommodate each individual student's learning style, readiness, and interest, and they involve using a variety of different instructional methods, such as flexible grouping to do so.
